Adiponectin gene variant tied to reduced risk of colorectal cancer
A variant in the gene for adiponectin -- the fat tissue-secreted hormone that is inversely linked to obesity and hyperinsulinemia -- is associated with decreased risk of colorectal cancer, new research shows.
 
Computer help may eliminate need for double reading of mammograms
In evaluating screening mammograms for breast cancer, a single reader with computer assistance can perform just as well as two readers, the results of a new study suggest.
 
CT-guided bronchoscopy doesn't improve lung cancer diagnosis
The use of computed tomography (CT) to steer bronchoscopy doesn't increase the sensitivity of lung cancer detection compared with conventional bronchoscopy, according to researchers at New York University in New York City.
 
High-dose therapy and stem cell transplant useful for resistant Hodgkin disease
High-dose therapy (HDT) combined with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) may prolong remissions and improve survival in patients with chemoresistant Hodgkin lymphoma, researchers from Seattle report.
 
Prevalence of larger colon polyps higher in blacks than whites
On screening colonoscopy, polyps greater than 9 mm in diameter are more likely to be detected in black individuals than in their white counterparts, according to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association for September 24.
 
Stereotactic radiosurgery improves survival in older patients with brain metastases
Patients aged 75 years and older with brain metastases respond about as well as younger patients to stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), according to a report in the August 15th issue of Cancer.
