Advocacy in action! How Cancer Services is helping one client, 5/26/2010

Jack Crutchfield is 72 and retired. On June 10th, 2009, he was diagnosed with renal cancer. The diagnosis came completely out of the blue; he was in good health and walked every day. He and his wife, Janet came in when he was prescribed an oral chemotherapy that would cost $3,937 per treatment. When they realized they would not be able to afford treatment, they weren't sure where to turn. Their doctor's office referred them to Cancer Services. Without assistance, he would never be able to start his life saving treatment.

At first glance his income appeared to exceed the guidelines for pharmaceutical assistance levels. However, realizing that he had used much of his income to pay for medical expenses and to help out family members, it was clear to us that he would not be able to afford the treatments.

After being initially denied for the program, LaToya Henderson, a member of the patient advocate team diligently worked through the appeal process to advocate for the patient's needs. Three hours after submitting the appeal, we got a call from his wife who tearfully reported that he had been approved and could start his treatments! The patient will now receive his medications free of charge through the end of the year!

The advocacy provided by our staff will no doubt make a difference in the quality of life for Jack and his family. Now, instead of worrying about whether they can afford his treatments, they can instead focus on his healing. Of his experience with Cancer Services, Jack says "Learning as I go, one day at a time, the brightest discovery so far is the kind, caring people at Cancer Services!"
