FAQs

I have questions about what I can and can't eat. who should I talk to?

Cancer Services offers nutrition classes every month to help you know what to eat during and after treatment. Our "Nutrition During Treatment" class is offered on the 2nd Thursday of every month from 12 – 1pm. We also have a "Living Well Beyond Cancer" group who meets monthly to discuss the latest information regarding a healthy survivorship lifestyle. Both groups are facilitated by Cancer Services' Wellness Director, Julie Lanford who is a Registered Dietitian and board certified specialist in oncology nutrition. To sign up for either of these classes, or to find out more information, call our office at 760-9983.  You can also go to www.CancerDietitian.com which provides lifestyle tips for survivorship and provides healthy recipes and common questions regarding nutrition and cancer.

Does Cancer Services pay for my medical bills?
No, however Cancer Services can refer people to national assistance programs that they may be eligible for.

How much are your wigs?
Wigs as well as scarves, hats, caps, and other head coverings are donated items and are offered free of charge to our clients.

Where do I go for help paying my house payment and utility bills?

Emergency assistance with housing and utility bills is available through local crisis assistance agencies. Contact a Patient Advocate for details about crisis agencies in your community. Limited emergency financial assistance may be available from Cancer Services to local cancer patients within six months of treatment through Cancer Services' direct financial assistance program after all other resources are exhausted and as funds are available.

Can Cancer Services help those who live outside of the Forsyth, Davie, Yadkin, Stokes area?
Someone who lives outside of the service area counties can still receive much needed assistance. There are limits on direct financial assistance for those outside of the service area; however members of the Patient Advocate Team are happy to connect all patients with local resources in their community or national resources that they may be eligible for. Patients living outside of the service area can also access all types of physical and social support at no charge. In fact, in 2008 Cancer Services assisted patients who lived in 40 different counties.

Do you have head coverings for those going through chemo?
Yes, we have wigs, hats, turbans, scarves as well as mastectomy supplies for breast cancer patients. These supplies are donated by the community and distributed at no cost to the patient.

Do you have to have an appointment?
No. Patients and/or family members can drop by at any time between 9am and 5pm Monday through Friday to speak with a patient advocate. If the patient is coming in for direct financial assistance, they can schedule an appointment with a member of the Patient Advocate Team to ensure that they have plenty of time to spend with the patient and discuss all programs they may be eligible for.

Does a patient have to be referred to take advantage of the programs and services?
Referrals are not required! They can be helpful if you think the patient would rather receive a call from a patient advocate prior to coming in. Referrals can also help for patients who may need to bring documentation with them. In the case of a financial referral, providing as much information as you can will save the patient time. You can share information with the Patient Advocate Team by calling 760-9983 and asking for a patient advocate. If you are in need of referral forms, please let your manager know, or call Cancer Services to have them dropped off.

Is Cancer Services a national organization?
No, Cancer Services is a local agency. It does not receive any national support. All money supporting Cancer Services comes from community donations and fundraisers and stays in our community to help cancer survivors who live in our area.
